STAGE AND SET DESIGN

The degree course in Stage Design aims to prepare a professional figure capable of operating within the area of stage design for the theatre, cinema, television and the field of entertainment and show business in general.
The job of a stage designer consists in devising and planning, for theatre and opera as well as for cinema and television, the setting within which the action of a scene takes place, taking advantage of all that technical devises can offer. He/she will engage in the analysis of the subject, the design and construction of the stage sets, the devising of lighting effects, the study of film shooting “systems”, the creation of scale models and the design and making of the costumes.
He/she works as a free-lance professional, independently as well as in cooperation with others.
He is a worthy collaborator with professional studios and enterprises and organizations operating in the field of show business.
In the accomplishment of his/her professional activity he/she is able to directly assume responsibilities for project planning and art direction.
A stage designer can be responsible for the planning and setting up of events such as exhibitions, conferences, meetings, expositions, fashion shows, open-air events, etc.
He/she is responsible, moreover, for the overall image and impression of a show or performance, utilizing his/her technical knowledge of lighting effects; he/she plans and designs costumes, furnishings, coverings and accessories for the show.

KNOWLEDGE BASE

- The background of the historical events which are at the basis of the current culture of stage design, costume design and the field of entertainment in general.
- Comprehensive overview of the History of Modern and Contemporary Art.
- Various types of materials, as well as the techniques of producing them, working them and putting them in place.
- The techniques of colour use.
- The techniques of camera and video photography.
- The techniques of perspective and architectural design in appropriate graphical scale.
- Utilization of the principle techniques of graphical representation, with particular reference to computer-assisted design (CAD) and to the techniques of digital modelling.
- The most effective methods from a functional and perceptual viewpoint for the disposition of elements of characterization of the scenographic space, according to various contextual conditions and planning requirements.
