Discover the secrets of performance art.

Performance Art Laboratory offers a direct and concrete experience of performance art, and prepares you for the conception and development of a live performance.
During the workshop, you will have the opportunity to practice various practices and identify your own unique and personal mode of expression. You will also get a full-immersion in the history and theory of performance art: the origin of this discipline and how it has evolved in different areas of the world, the leading artists on the international scene, the emergence of festivals and dedicated exhibitions.

Performance Art Laboratory explores the relationship between performance art and other performance disciplines such as theatre, dance, video art, photography and fashion, taking into consideration body art and various political performance works. Physical and mental exercises borrowed from yoga and Zen meditation will be offered. You will have the opportunity to create and stage your own performance at the end of the workshop.

This workshop is intended for students and emerging artists in the field of visual arts and theatre, who want to explore this powerful genre of artistic expression.

    JULY 4/5/6/7/8
    From 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

The workshop combines theory and practice. The theoretical part consists of the history of performance art from Futurism and DADA to the present times, the ways in which it has evolved in different parts of the world. The works of some of the most important artists of performance art such as Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, Joseph Beuys, Vito Acconci, and others will be analyzed and discussed. The relationship between performance art and the contemporary art scene, the connection with museums and commercial galleries, and the key role of performance art in major art events, festivals, and biennials will be examined.

A recurring theme will be the documentation of performance art: from the written descriptions of its origins to the grainy black-and-white photographs in the 1960s, the video footage of the 1980s, to the creation of avatars and performance art in Virtual Reality today.

The hands-on portion is essential to understanding performance art and includes numerous physical and mental exercises, including some derived from yoga, several trust exercises, endurance exercises, and significant meditation techniques drawn from Zen Buddhism. Participants will be guided through a particular creative process and through that process will be prepared for their individual and/or collective performances that will be staged at the end of the workshop.

    Marta Jovanović
Marta Jovanović is a performance artist and educator with a mission to promote and facilitate further progress of the discipline. Founder of the Performance Art Program at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, artist in residency at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles in 2017, Jovanović is also the subject of the multiple award-winning documentary “Born Just Now”, by the American director Robert Adanto. Her works, among which the most notable ones are “Pionirka”, “It is My Body”, “Love”, and “Motherhood”, are in important private and museum collections. The performance “BelgradeMermaid” opened the Belgrade Biennale in 2018, while its continuation “Mermaid’s Tale” became a performance in Virtual Reality the following year. Curator Kathy Battista wrote a survey of the artist’s early works titled “Marta Jovanovic: Performing the Self”, which was published by the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center of City University of New York, while in the book New York New Wave, Battista positions Jovanović among the most urgent New York City contemporary feminist artists.
