Mural Art: Rome in Color!

METHODOLOGY
Interactive lessons: slide presentations on theory, history and case studies of significant murals.
Practical workshops: in-class design exercises (sketches, mock-ups) and practical painting demonstrations.
Site analysis exercise: on-site visit to a selected wall or indoor space to study the real context.
Group work and critique: collaborative projects with peer-feedback sessions and group discussions.
Technical execution: transferring designs onto large-scale surfaces using transfer methods (grid, projection) and appropriate tools and materials. Demonstration of skills in preparing and applying paint to 2×2 m panels (or walls), following best practices for safety and materials management.
Final presentation: students present a mural project and an operational plan, simulating a proposal for a client, followed by a critique session.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course aims to guide students in discovering mural art, exploring its history, social role and many contemporary expressions. Through theoretical lessons and practical activities, participants will learn the fundamental techniques of large-scale painting, gaining familiarity with the materials, tools and safety regulations required to work in real-world contexts.
Particular attention will be paid to developing design skills, from composition to colour, perspective and proportions, refining the ability to transform an idea into a coherent and communicative artistic intervention. Students will also learn to analyse the physical and urban context of a mural site — assessing its scale, materials, light, pedestrian flows and other variables — in order to adapt the project to the space in which it will be created.
The programme will also provide useful tools for the professional management of a project: from client communication to drafting proposals, from defining a budget to logistical planning. Finally, the workshop experience will encourage the development of teamwork, creative thinking and the ability to integrate art with architecture and the community dimension of public spaces.

Clarisse Hermont

Clarisse Hermont is a visual artist from Minas Gerais, Brazil. Born in Belo Horizonte, she currently lives in Rome, where she completed a Master’s degree in Painting at RUFA.

After graduating in Architecture and Urban Planning in 2021, she began developing and consolidating her artistic practice in 2018. Through art, she transforms the grey uniformity of cities into environments capable of celebrating the beauty of nature. Her research is characterised by the development of innovative techniques and the continuous exploration of visual languages capable of stimulating creativity and enhancing the aesthetic impact of her work.

A versatile and experimental artist, Clarisse has a broad and varied portfolio that reflects the personal evolution of her creative journey. Alongside her artistic practice, she is also involved in teaching: she is an experienced educator with strong skills in classroom management, workshop development and student motivation.

Open, empathetic and communicative, she adopts innovative teaching methods that encourage students’ understanding of and interest in the world of art. Her latest work, supported by the Municipality of Artena, is a mural in memory of Willy Monteiro Duarte, created in agreement with his family and through the collective collaboration of local citizens.
