The graduation documentary LE CRISALIDI, an autobiographical account of Gabriele Biasi’s family, serves as the starting point for a reflection on the relationship between reality and memory, autobiography and truth.

Documentary filmmaking should no longer be understood as a passive gaze upon reality, but rather as a universal and creative means of revealing a reality—one’s own—that might otherwise remain unseen. Much like fiction cinema, which constructs stories through images, documentary filmmaking, and autobiographical documentary in particular, does exactly the same: starting from memories that are inherently fragmented, blurred, and elusive, it creates a narrative through new expressive forms. The experimental possibilities of autobiographical documentary are virtually limitless, breaking conventions that fiction often struggles to overcome. Is there, perhaps, any real difference between what is true and what I remember?
