Media Cartographies: Art, AI and New Perceptions

Six artistic residencies exploring the relationship between technology, data, perception and contemporary reality.

Starting on 5 October 2026, Media Cartographies – From Data to Perception enters its production phase. The project is promoted by RE:HUMANISM in collaboration with RUFA, Liminal Space – La Casa delle Arti Transmediali, and NABA, with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture and SIAE as part of the Per Chi Crea programme.

Following the training programme held between June and July and a subsequent phase of individual mentoring, the project continues with a programme of six artistic residencies hosted by Liminal Space in Rome, from October 2026 to February 2027.

Art, data and new technologies

Media Cartographies is a research, training and production platform dedicated to the transformations generated by contemporary technological systems and to the ways in which algorithms, artificial intelligence, data, digital infrastructures and immersive environments shape our perception of reality.

At the heart of the project is the concept of the map, understood not simply as a representation of territory, but as a critical and sensitive device through which to interpret a present shaped by continuous flows of information, images and data.

During the residencies, the selected artists will develop their research in close collaboration with the project’s curatorial and technical team. Their work will take shape through installations, performances, audiovisual works and interactive environments, turning cartography into a tool for exploring the contemporary world.

Each residency will also include two Open Studio days, open to the public, offering the opportunity to engage directly with the artists’ creative processes, experiments and works in progress.

The RUFA artists

In 2027, the programme will also involve two artists from the RUFA community.

From 11 to 17 January 2027, Lucrezia Della Balda, a RUFA student in the Sculpture and Installation Bachelor’s Degree Programme, will take part in the residency with Πρόθεσις, an acousmatic concert and sculptural installation exploring the voice as material to be reconstructed and transformed. Through artificial intelligence, the project imagines a possible re-emergence of the lost voice of Greek tragedy, giving form to an artificial and androgynous chorus.

The programme will conclude from 8 to 14 February 2027 with Martina Carbone, RUFA artist and alumna of the Multimedia Design and Creative AI Master’s Degree Programme, and her project Cartographies of Pre-Mediation. The work reflects on the conditions of visibility in the computational age through a performance based on open-source astronomical data and real-time processing systems, capable of generating variable constellations influenced by the presence of the audience.

The participation of Lucrezia Della Balda and Martina Carbone represents an important opportunity for RUFA to showcase the artistic research developed within its community and bring it into a context of production, experimentation and exchange focused on the most current languages of contemporary art.

Taken together, the six projects form a constellation of different artistic practices, united by a shared interest in exploring the relationship between image and reality, data and sensory experience, artificial intelligence, surveillance, visibility and the transformation of knowledge.

With Media Cartographies, cartography becomes both an artistic practice and a tool for observing, interpreting and sharing the transformations of the present.
