The exhibition Terme di Diocleziano. Fotografare il Museo Nazionale Romano, curated by Giorgio di Noto and Chiara Giobbe, opened on Friday 12 April 2024 at the Museo Nazionale Romano – Palazzo Altemps and presents the results of the photographic documentation work carried out by students of the RUFA Photography Programme in the spaces of the oldest site of the Museo Nazionale Romano: the majestic Terme di Diocleziano.
The exhibition was also an opportunity to present the volume of the same name, published by the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (ICCD), which offers a rich and comprehensive account of the work produced by the students and is part of a multi-year photographic commission project in which, every year, a RUFA class works in collaboration with the ICCD to document a museum or cultural institution.

The Museo Nazionale Romano opened the spaces of its historic Terme di Diocleziano site to RUFA students, allowing them to explore the Great Halls, Michelangelo’s Cloister and all the indoor and outdoor areas that form part of the Baths complex.
They were also able to photograph an extraordinary event: for the first time in many years, Halls I-V were emptied, and the students were able to document these evocative spaces at different times and under different lighting conditions, both during the day and at night, engaging with the structure, light, shadows and surfaces of these majestic and exceptionally bare spaces. Alongside the technical and methodological rigour required for this type of work, there was also room for experimentation: these different approaches therefore result in an effective, evocative and at the same time personal and unprecedented representation of the photographed spaces.
Documenting Cultural Heritage
RUFA and ICCD have launched an artistic and heritage documentation project that is now in its second edition, following the success of the first initiative: “Prospettive. Fotografare la Galleria Spada”.
The exhibition at Palazzo Altemps also gives the protagonists of this project the opportunity to discuss their previous experience and future projects as part of the meeting scheduled for 17:00 on 12 April at the Teatro di Palazzo Altemps.
