The Province in Italian Comics – Giulio Cosimi

The project aims to analyse the formation of emotional bonds and how they influence the creation and interpretation of works of art. Viewers are able to recognise themselves through identification, meaning the extent to which they find something of themselves in what they are observing. This is connected to personal experiences, which contribute to the formation of identity.

The “emotional landscape” is typical of representations of the Italian provinces in comics. The provinces are slow-paced spaces, removed from the constant progress dictated by the city. This allows for a layering of testimonies, in which physical traces of different generations survive alongside one another.

Telling the story of the provinces is not merely a mental process, but also a representation of real places to which one can return and draw from life.

“Greetings from”, the project connected to the thesis, is a series of postcards depicting moments and fragments of provincial life. The stories combine real materials altered through drawing, eliminating any clear distinction between fiction and non-fiction. Depending on the reader’s emotional closeness to the subject, the work may be interpreted either as a report or as a coming-of-age story.
