Giulio Cosimi was born in Orvieto in 1995 and studied Painting in Rome at RUFA Rome University of Fine Arts.
He currently works as a comic artist and illustrator with collectives and publishers both in Italy and abroad.
Paesaggi affettivi: la Provincia nel fumetto italiano
The work aims to analyse the formation of emotional bonds and how these influence the creation and interpretation of artistic works. The viewer is able to recognise themselves through identification, that is, through how much of themselves they find in what they are looking at. This is something connected to personal experiences that contribute to the formation of identity.
The “emotional landscape” is typical of the representation of the Province in Italian comics. The Province is a slow space, outside the continuous progress dictated by the city. This allows for a stratigraphy of testimonies, where physical traces of different generations survive together.
Portraying the Province is not merely a mental process, but also a representation of real spaces to which it is possible to return and draw from life.
“Saluti da”, the project connected to the thesis, is a series of postcards that recount moments and fragments of the Province. The stories combine real materials that are altered through drawing, where there is no longer a clear distinction between fiction and non-fiction, and it is the reader’s emotional closeness that determines whether it is perceived as a report or a coming-of-age story.
