Morte manifesta. La narrazione verbo-visiva dell’annuncio funebre murale
“Morte manifesta. La narrazione verbo-visiva dell’annuncio funebre murale” is a thesis project based on the analysis of the phenomenon of wall-mounted funeral announcements. The book is divided into two main chapters: the first is based on a historical investigation of the different writing practices used for the public communication of death; the second focuses on the analysis of wall-mounted funeral posters, with a focus on those produced in the Naples area.
Here, the death notice, often characterised by the presence of the deceased person’s nickname in dialect, becomes a linguistic and socio-anthropological document, synthesising individual lives and making it possible to trace the portrait of an entire community, capturing its sense of dwelling, its rituals and its relationships.
With the aim of documenting and safeguarding this phenomenon, providing an online reference platform for scholars and enthusiasts, the project proposes the creation of a digital collection of funeral posters from the province of Naples, bringing together photographs from various private archives.
