Two RUFA Alumni among the winners of YPIA #5, the national competition dedicated to emerging art photography.
Christian Quatela with the project “Sulla soglia del vero” and Sara Scognamiglio with “She is Made of Code and Flesh”, both RUFA Alumni graduated in Photography and Audiovisual, are among the four winners of the fifth edition of Young Photographers from Italian Academies (YPIA), the national call promoted by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania to support emerging authorial photography within Italian art institutions.
YPIA #5 invited participants to reflect on the theme “Supervisions”, understood as a critical and conscious gaze on reality, images, and perceptual processes. The two RUFA projects stood out for the originality of their vision, the solidity of their research, and their expressive quality, capturing the attention of a jury composed of leading figures in the Italian artistic and photographic landscape.
The winners were selected from 46 submitted projects, coming from 14 Italian institutions including Academies of Fine Arts, ISIA, Universities, Foundations, and other third-level educational bodies.
The four winning projects, including those by Quatela and Scognamiglio, will be featured in the group exhibition YPIA #5, scheduled from 2 to 19 October 2025 at the Galleria Massimo Ligreggi in Catania. The exhibition is part of Supervision. Views and Dialogues on Photography, an international project awarded by the MUR call and supported by SISF – Società Italiana per lo Studio della Fotografia.
During the exhibition’s opening, in the presence of the jury, the Clou Prize will also be awarded, offering one of the twelve finalists the opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in the spaces of Clou – Contemporary Art Circle in Ragusa. All twelve selected projects, including those by our students, will be featured in the official YPIA #5 catalogue, curated by Rosario Antoci (artist and lecturer at ABACT), with graphic design by Gianni Latino, director of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Catania.
