Acquire painting techniques through the experience of a practical course at the Academy.

The drawing and painting course for middle school students offers the opportunity to explore artistic creativity through a variety of techniques and materials. Through practical and stimulating lessons, students will develop their artistic skills and freely express their individuality. The course aims to promote creativity, manual dexterity and artistic expression skills, while encouraging students to explore the visual world around them.

The drawing and painting course for middle school students aims to introduce students to the world of visual art through a series of practical and stimulating activities. The course programme is structured to guide students through the different stages of the creative process, encouraging them to explore new techniques and develop their artistic skills.

Purpose: The course aims to foster students’ creativity, manual skills and capacity for artistic expression, providing them with the knowledge and skills needed to create meaningful and personal works of art.

Metodology
Lessons will be based on a combination of practical demonstrations by the teacher, guided exercises and individual student projects. Active student participation and the sharing of ideas and feedback within the group will be encouraged.

who the course is aimed at
The course is aimed at middle school students (11-14 years old) interested in exploring the world of visual art and developing their artistic skills.

Specific transversal competences
Students will acquire specific skills in drawing and painting, including stroke control, colour mixing and composition. In addition, they will develop soft skills such as creativity, problem solving and collaboration.

Materials required:
– Graphite pencils of various hardnesses
– Set of brushes for acrylic/oil
– Oil or acrylic colours (basic palette)
– Palettes and palettes for mixing colours
– Drawing paper and cardboard
– Canvas for painting (if using oil or acrylic colours)
– Apron to protect clothes

Note: Pupils are also advised to bring a notebook for notes and sketches.

Teaching unit:
Lesson 1: Introduction to Materials and Tools
Presentation of the materials and tools needed to paint in acrylic and oil.
Practical demonstration on the correct use of brushes, colours and media.
Guided exercise: creation of a basic colour palette and testing on cardboard.

Lesson 2: Fundamentals of Colour Theory
Discussion on the basic principles of colour theory.
Exercises on the effective use of primary, secondary and complementary colours.
Practical application.

Lesson 3: Acrylic Painting Techniques
Introduction to acrylic painting techniques.
Demonstration of the different consistencies of acrylic colour (opaque, transparent, etc.).
Practical exercise: creation of a still life using various acrylic colour application techniques.

Lesson 4: Oil Painting Techniques
Presentation of the differences between acrylic and oil painting.
Demonstration of oil painting techniques, including ‘wet on wet’ and ‘layering’.
Guided exercise: painting a landscape using the techniques learned.

Lesson 5: Composition and Perspective
Discussion on composition and perspective in art.
Practical exercises on the arrangement of elements in the composition.
Practical application: painting an urban scene using principles of composition and perspective.

Lesson 6: Portrait Study
Introduction to portrait technique.
Demonstration of basic facial proportions and structures.
Practical exercise: creation of a portrait using a live model or reference photograph.

Lesson 7: Expressionism and Abstraction
Discussion of the art movements of expressionism and abstractionism.
Practical exercises on the creation of expressive and abstract works.
Practical application: painting an abstract or expressive work using gestural techniques.

Lesson 8: Landscape and Light
In-depth study of the theme of landscape and the representation of light.
Practical exercises on the use of light and shadows in the landscape.
Practical application: painting a natural landscape using light and shadow effects.

Lesson 9: Personal Themes and Experimentation
Discussion on personal themes and artistic experimentation.
Free exercises to allow students to explore their artistic interests.
Practical application: creation of a work based on a personal theme chosen by the students.

Lesson 10: Revision and Final Presentation
Revision of the works realised during the course.
Presentation of the works to the other participants and collective discussion.

Professor and coordinator of the Painting course at the Rufa Academy of Fine Arts in Rome; graduated in Advertising and Communication from USCS University, attended a post-graduate Latu Sensu course in Art History at FAAP University, studied Painting and Drawing at the SVA School of Visual Arts in New York and in Italy obtained a Master’s degree in Sculpture. His artistic work is closely related to art teaching, his painting is conceived as an artistic learning process, allowing the return to icons as passages that precede representation. His exhibition activities include galleries, public spaces, museum collections and art residencies; some of his most significant projects include the Historical Illustrations for the Ministry of Culture of the Sultanate of Oman and the Italian road safety campaign ‘Drive Your Life’, promoted by the ASTM/SIAS group, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and in collaboration with the United Nations.
