We Talk about Comics is a series of talks that brings together students, professionals, and the public through lectures and discussions with some of the most interesting voices on the contemporary scene.

The events, open to the public and free of charge, offer the creative community the opportunity to explore languages, creative processes, and professional perspectives. The series is curated by Claudio Spuri, coordinator of the RUFA BA in Graphic Design – Comics and Illustration, active across RUFA campuses in Rome and Milan.

The guest will be introduced and the talk moderated by comics & lettering designer and RUFA lecturer Lorenzo Bolzoni.

«Stroke by stroke»

Chiara Riva’s lecture, titled Stroke by stroke, offers an in-depth look at calligraphic practice, starting from the role of writing tools. Through a brief theoretical introduction and live demonstrations, the talk will show how nibs, brushes, and materials influence the shape, contrast, and character of letters.

From the initial concept to the development of the final project, case studies and commercial works will be analyzed, highlighting the stages of the design process and the choices that shape the final visual outcome. The talk aims to provide a concrete and informed perspective on calligraphy, emphasizing the relationship between gesture, tools, and design.

Chiara Riva is a calligrapher and graphic designer. She has collaborated on communication projects for Fabriano, KIKO, Feltrinelli, and Poste Italiane, as well as campaigns for AISM and Sanofi. Her work has been featured in international magazines and publications such as Alphabet Magazine, Speedball Textbook, and Letter Arts Review.

She leads workshops and lectures in Italy and abroad for institutions and festivals, including Associazione Calligrafica Italiana, Typofest, and Torino Graphic Days. Her live performances have been presented at events such as Lucca Comics and Inchiostro Festival. She is the author of Il senso della linea (2019) and co-author of Manuale di Calligrafia (2020).
