We Talk about Comics is the series of meetings that brings together students, professionals and the public through talks and moments of discussion with some of the most interesting voices on the contemporary scene.

The events, open to the public and free of charge, offer the creative community the opportunity to explore languages, creative processes and professional perspectives. The series is curated by Claudio Spuri, coordinator of the RUFA BA in Graphic Design – Comics and Illustration, active across RUFA campuses in Rome and Milan.

The guest will be introduced and the talk moderated by Amos Bianchi, RUFA Director’s Delegate.

“Wonderful Years: Marvel and the Counterculture”

Francesco Jodice’s lecture, titled Wonderful Years: Marvel and the Counterculture, reflects on the relationship between comics and social transformations in the United States between the 1960s and 1970s.

In a period marked by the rise of counterculture — from the Black Panthers to the Beat Generation, from hippies to the Hells Angels, up to symbolic events such as Woodstock and the Vietnam War — a new generation challenges the American dream, redefining its imagery and values.

Within the same context, the editorial offices of Marvel Comics in New York became a place where young writers and artists intercepted, and in some cases anticipated, these instances, contributing through comics to what can be seen as a vast generational narrative.

The talk will offer a cross-disciplinary perspective between visual culture, history and storytelling, highlighting comics as a tool for critically interpreting the present.

Francesco Jodice (Naples, 1967) lives and works in Milan. After graduating in architecture (1995), he began his artistic research through photography and video. In 1999 he co-founded the collective Multiplicity.

Between 1996 and 2004 he explored the relationship between urban landscapes and communities in projects such as What We Want, The Secret Traces and The Morocco Affair. He later focused on anthropological dynamics and global phenomena with works such as Hikikomori, Ritratti di classe and the Citytellers trilogy.

Since 2008 his research has focused on geopolitics and the crisis of the West, themes central to works such as Atlante, American Recordings, Rivoluzioni and West. For Jodice, art represents a form of civic poetics and public participation, as seen in projects such as La notte del drive-in. Milano spara, Babel and Scenario.

He teaches at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milan. He has exhibited at international institutions including Documenta Kassel, the Venice Biennale, the International Center of Photography, Tate Modern and the Museo del Prado. His works are part of numerous Italian and international public collections.
