TEACHING IN ENGLISH / 1 WEEK / JULY 6-10, 2026 / ON CAMPUS

Mural Art: Rome in Color! represents a unique experience in the Roman context: one of the first muralism courses offered by a university officially recognized by the MUR. This is not simply a technical workshop on mural painting, but a comprehensive educational program that explores art as a collective practice and a tool for social transformation.

The aim is to develop artistic and design skills capable of engaging with urban space, giving life to collaborative works that intertwine aesthetics and architecture and emerge from the interaction between individual creativity and community participation. This course also brings together some of the main artistic and technical vocations that define RUFA as an Academy: from painting to design, from architecture to performance, creating an interdisciplinary experience that broadens the creative and professional perspectives of the participants.

At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance will be issued, upon attendance of at least 4 out of the 5 scheduled lessons, for the possible recognition of 2 CFAs.

METHODOLOGY
Interactive lessons: slide presentations on theory, history, and case studies of significant murals.
Practical workshops: in-class design exercises (sketches, mock-ups) and hands-on painting demonstrations.
Site analysis exercise: on-site visit to a wall or indoor space selected for real-context study.
Group work and critique: collaborative projects with peer feedback sessions and group discussions.
Technical execution: translating projects onto large surfaces using transfer methods (grid, projection) and appropriate tools and materials. Demonstration of skills in preparing and applying paint on 2×2 m panels (or walls), following safety and material management best practices.
Final presentation: students present a mural project and an operational plan, simulating a client proposal, followed by a critique session.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course aims to guide students through the discovery of mural art, exploring its history, social role, and multiple contemporary forms. Through theoretical lessons and practical activities, participants will learn fundamental large-scale painting techniques, becoming familiar with materials, tools, and safety regulations necessary for real-world contexts.
Particular attention is given to the development of design skills, from composition to color, from perspective to proportions, refining the ability to transform an idea into a coherent and communicative artistic intervention. Students will also learn to analyze the physical and urban context of a mural site — evaluating scale, materials, lighting, traffic flows, and other variables — to adapt the project to the space it will occupy.
The program also provides tools for professional project management: from client communication to proposal drafting, from budget definition to logistical planning. Finally, the workshop experience fosters teamwork, creative thinking, and the ability to integrate art with architecture and the community dimension of public spaces.
