Masterclass with Yahor Palis: Compositing as a Creative Key to CGI Animation

From 26 to 31 May 2025, students of the Master of Arts in Computer Animation and Visual Effects took part in an intensive masterclass led by Yahor Palis, a Senior Lighting & Lookdev Artist with international experience, specialised in building visual identity through lighting, shading, and compositing.

A RUFA graduate, Yahor returned to the Academy—as often happens with professionals who have grown within our community—to share his journey and experience in the world of digital animation with the new generation of creatives.

The programme focused on compositing for CGI animation productions, with particular attention to the integration of different render passes, image optimisation, and the definition of the final look. Starting from the logic of lighting and rendering engines, the work concentrated on developing the visual mood, balancing the elements, and ensuring stylistic coherence throughout the project.

The masterclass placed compositing at the core of the production process—as both a technical and creative phase—essential to bringing the final visual concept to life in CGI productions.
