Fiber Space

Visual and Innovation design Exhibition. Curators: Laura Del Debbio, Tommaso Teloni.

31 January – 3 February, RUFA Space, Pastificio Cerere – Via degli Ausoni 7

Fiber Space is a sensory journey through the profound change of the little-known fibre art: the viewer, weaving an intimate bond with the experiences of the fibre artists, investigates aspects ranging from initial marginalisation to overcoming prejudice, from the artistic revolution to the complete fusion with the medium and art itself.

From the simplicity of a humble and ancient practice emerges extraordinary creativity.
The Fibre Art movement originated in the 1960s, when fabric was stripped of its functional connotations in order to enhance its intrinsic qualities and project it into the sphere of art.
The fiber artists began to break away from the expectations and categories imposed by traditional textile art that saw tapestry as the only means of expression, violating its technical limits, purity and historical boundaries.
Fiber art is an inner experience, it is memory and a motif of transmission, it is a constant dialogue between meanings, materials and manual labour.
It is a form of collective revolt that has bridged the gap between the male-dominated museum space and the female-dominated domestic environment, a revolution that has crossed the traditional boundaries between craft and fine art.

Towards a new perception?

Towards a new dimension?

Towards a new merger?

Over time the definition of fibre has evolved through the fusion and disappearance of boundaries between disciplines, dismembering the traditional definition of material and exploring its new potential to transform it into innovative visual effects. The new creative quest is in the profound and intimate exploration of the new, in pushing boundaries, in investigating the multiplicity of materials and technological innovations. The gesture that previously belonged exclusively to the artists becomes communication between work and audience, feelings and actions merge directly with the experience and poetics of the fibre artists.
