Gaetano Castelli in the history of RAI set design

Antonin Joseph Di Santantonio, architect and RUFA professor of Technology and materials for set design, has just published his latest book in collaboration with the architect Maria Beatrice Gallo: “Gaetano Castelli in the history of RAI scenography”. A project that reconstructs the career of the set designer from the beginning up to his latest RAI collaborations, the last of which was the preparation for the 70th Sanremo Festival in 2020.

The text, accompanied by images from the repertoire, sketches, design tables and in-depth analysis of scenography, traces the activity studded with successes; from the award as Best Designer of the year for the scenography of ’69 of “L’ora della verità”, up to the three coveted international awards of the Montreux Festival: the Silver Rose in ’78 for “Il Ribaltone”, the Rose of gold in ’83 for “Al Paradise”, and again the Silver Rose in ’99 for “Francamente me ne infischio” by Celentano. There are also unpublished testimonies from authors, conductors and showgirls, directors, orchestra and photography directors, graphic designers, costume designers, technicians, foremen and set designers and collaborators.

Architect and RUFA professor of Technology and materials for set design, he was hired in 1983 at RAI, where he worked in Television Production as an inspector and organizer until 1994, when he moved to the Scenography sector with the position of Head of Construction Sites and Laboratories and coordinator of the departments of builders, decorators, graphic designers, model makers and special effects. In 2004 he promoted the exhibition / conference on the history of scenography and costumes “DI / SEGNI Una scena lunga 50 anni” and in 2005 he was responsible for the Design and Evaluation area of ​​the Studio Set-up sector. From 2012 to 2018, he was in charge of Costumes and Make-up Scenic Preparation and from 2019 he has been working at RAI Production Planning. He was the holder of academic courses in Scenography and in 2008 he published with M. Beatrice Gallo: History of Television Scenography by RAI ERI and Harman London.

Maria Beatrice Gallo

Architect, from 1985 he began to collaborate with the RAI in scenography. He signs the furnishing of programs by: P. Baudo (two editions of Novecento and Cinquanta Storia della TV di chi l’ha fatta e di chi l’ha vista), Piero and Alberto Angela (two editions of SuperQuark and reconstructions for Ulisse il piacere della scoperta), C. Conti (I raccomandati), C. Augias (two editions of Enigma), L. Colò (Alle falde del Kilimanjaro), as well as events such as Via Crucis and the Film Festival. In 2004 he collaborated in the exhibition / conference on scenography and costumes, “DI / SEGNI Una scena lunga 50 anni” organized by Allestimento Studi at the Auditorium of the Foro Italico in Rome and in 2008 he published with AJ Di Santantonio: History of Television Scenography by RAI ERI and Harman London. Since 2012 she has been seconded to Stage Set Up Costumes and Makeup.
