Iginio De Luca guest at RUFA: a meeting between urban art and contemporary poetry

As part of the lessons on Modern Art History 2 and Contemporary Art History, curated by professors Daniela Cotimbo and Fabrizio Pizzuto, RUFA had the pleasure of hosting the multifaceted artist Iginio De Luca. The meeting, a significant moment of dialogue between students and a leading figure in the contemporary art scene, took place in an atmosphere of great participation and interest.

Who is Iginio De Luca

Born in Formia (LT) on August 21, 1966, De Luca graduated in Painting in 1989 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he currently teaches Decoration. His artistic career is characterized by a variety of expressive languages: he is a musician, visual artist, videomaker, and performer. In recent years, he has focused his research on the production of videos, photographs, and performances he calls blitz, actions halfway between urban art and performative intervention.

These blitz, often carried out with airplanes, projections on buildings, or impactful visual installations, aim to destabilize and surprise, demanding active participation from the audience. While initially critiquing the crisis of contemporary values, the artist has recently shifted his focus to more poetic interventions, always with the goal of breaking certainties and disrupting expressive codes.

The talk: topics discussed and key moments

During the meeting, De Luca provided an overview of his twenty-year career, exploring the evolution of his poetics. Starting from his early autobiographical works, he focused on his famous blitz, initially characterized by a strong subversive charge and later transformed into poetic expressions. The artist shared with RUFA students the creative and production processes behind these actions, highlighting the transition from one medium to another and the evolution of his research.

One of the central moments of the talk was the discussion of his latest performance, conceived for the 2024 edition of Arte in Nuvola, a prestigious contemporary art fair in Rome curated by Adriana Polveroni and RUFA professor Daniela Cotimbo. Through dialogue with the students, De Luca stimulated reflections on the dynamics of production and the significance of his actions, encouraging a critical and participatory reading of contemporary art.

A meeting between history and contemporaneity

The event represented an important learning opportunity for students, offering an in-depth look at the work of an artist who combines ethics and aesthetics, technology, and behavior. Thanks to the presence of Iginio De Luca and the coordination of professors Daniela Cotimbo and Fabrizio Pizzuto, the lesson transformed into a laboratory of ideas and dialogues, enriching the educational journey of RUFA students.
