Nowadays taking photos might seem like the easiest thing in the world. Just with a mobile phone people can have their photographs distributed all over the world through media: this is how the “citizen journalist” was born.

Beyond this example, who hasn’t tried to preserve a memory an important moment of their life, to document an event? At the end of the 1800s, Photography was defined: a mirror with memory. In reality, it was soon realized that the interpretation and therefore the choices of the photographer, subject, moment and frame, make Photography something different from a simple reproduction of reality. It is a very complex matter.

In history, Photography has played a contradictory role. It was first of all accused of determining the end of Painting, then of generating new art forms, from abstract painting to expressionism. On the one hand it denounces injustices, it is the voice for those who have no voice. On the other hand, it has been too often an instrument in the hands of economic power and political propaganda.

Learning to produce images, and therefore knowing how to read them, also means learning to defend oneself from them and have a freer vision. The practical lessons include photography workshops and classroom meetings.

Through the method of direct experience, the course aims to teach the potential of photography, teaching its proper use in order to inform, tell and express one’s creativity.

Practical experiences will make us understand the importance of knowing how to observe before photographing, to identify What, How and When to shoot. It will be an opportunity to learn shooting techniques on location, the technology of the camera, the choice of the equipment, exposure to and measuring light, the lenses.

Viewing the images and discussions within the classes will help the students to understand the evocative value of Reportage as a story of life through images and to realize the difficulty and time needed to make fully create it.
