Film-making basics and techniques for making a film.

Through the creation of a personal audiovisual project, this intensive course dedicated to Film-making is aimed at all those who wish to acquire and develop the basic techniques of cinematography.

The aim is to follow the making of a short film, starting from the conceptualisation phase until its screening.
It starts with an understanding of the types of audiovisuals that can be developed, also thanks to the study and analysis of materials provided by the history of cinema, and continues with practical laboratory experiences. The exercises include the development of a project idea, the drafting of the screenplay, the definition of the directing style, the choices of photography direction, editing practices.

At the end of the course, a certificate of attendance will be issued, based on attendance at at least 8 of the 12 lectures, for a possible recognition of 2 ECTS.

    Objectives: in the Film-making course each participant has the opportunity to develop a personal pathway to learn different filmmaking techniques and put them immediately into practice in the realisation of an audiovisual content: film, video clip or documentary, also thanks to the use of professional equipment provided by the Academy and practical activities. Lessons are enriched by historical notes on the history of cinema and documentaries thanks to the viewing and comparison of audio-visual materials.

    During the course the following topics and technical applications are experimented:
    Elements of contemporary film
    The shot. Viewing parts of short films and definition of the framing and shooting.

    The screenplay
    – From the idea to the subject;
    – The lineup and the treatment;
    – The technical script and the storyboard. Direction plan.

    The direction
    – Staging method, basic choreography, the composition of the frame, production principles.
    – The styles of direction, shooting with a tripod and hand-held camera.

    Basic elements of photography
    The use of shutter, gain, iris, and white balance.

    Principle of the three-point lighting, backlighting, and side lighting.

    The assembling
    – Basic principles of editing, cutting, order of the shots and their associative effect;
    – Rhythm, visual and temporal continuity, shot/reverse shot, entrances and exits, 180 degree rule, expressions;
    – The types of editing: narrative, expressive, rhythmic, ideological;
    – Laboratory: editing with professional software.

    The sound
    – The functions of sound, sound and space, sound and time, sound and story: the “listening point”, words and voices, music and noises;
    – Laboratory: computerized editing.

    The projection
    Intergroup: presentation, analysis and discussion of the films made by the students.

    RUFA students: 10%
    University Students: 5%  (upon presentation of the university booklet)
