We Will Meet After the Fall/Mamma

Visual Arts Exhibition and performance by artists Vanshika Agrawal and Silvia Giambrone.
Curated by Silvia Marsano.

Opening: Monday 20 November 2023 at 6 p.m.

The exhibition comes from the intention to establish a dialogue between two artists of different generations, united by their use of performance language, but very different in their approach, Vanshika Agrawal, RUFA graduate of Fine Arts, and Silvia Giambrone, a mid-career artist who has been internationally active for years. In the direction of shared practices and the construction of a common language, the artists insert themselves into the space intertwining through two different registers, the performance We Will Meet After the Fall created by Vanshika Agrawal specifically for this exhibition and the audio installation Mamma, from 2009 by Silvia Giambrone.

The thin line that unites the two interventions is actually more of a knotted rope, referring to temporal shifts and symbolic short-circuits.
Vanshika Agrawal inhabits the space by recounting the time that passes and returns, in its continuous phase transitions and memory, while Silvia Giambrone triggers the story and, as always with grace and brutality, returns it to the women. A mother who calls her own mother, who calls her own mother, conveying the thought through the word that is most familiar and usually reassuring to everyone: Mother. This infinite echo takes us back into a dimension that becomes disturbing in the completely irrational fear that perhaps something has happened, or will happen, and in the anxiety of a contact that becomes more oppressive by the minute.
From this suggestion, Vanshika Agrawal interacts with sheets of ice that are lowered from the ceiling and represent the signs of time, and by unthreading ceramic beads stuck in the ice of an internalised slavery or atrocious dependency, she returns them to the consciousness of being, to today.
Silvia Giambrone is the fire, Vanshika Agrawal the water, and together they weave the fabric of a female genealogy that dwells in the relationship, in the gaze and feeds on pain, joy, time, sharing and authenticity.

The event is part of the RUFAlumni, which offers former students of the Academy – in this case the artist Vanshika Agrawal – the opportunity to present their work in the Academy’s spaces.
